One Room Challenge–Week 6, The Family Room Reveal

I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. It is an absolute MIRACLE that this room is being shown today. We actually just moved in on Halloween and I am still unpacking. If you are visiting Décor To Adore for the first time you can see the room’s progress week by week below:

Week 1 // Week 2 // Week 3 // Week 4 // Week 5

Since we received the keys 6 weeks ago our 30 year old home has welcomed us with a few gas leaks, a backed up main sewer line, mice in the attic, sketchy electrical wiring and a raging case of strep throat for me. But all is now well…for now.

Welcome to our Family Room.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 155-001

Remember what it used to look like?

These were the professional real estate photos that were taken for the listing. Without the lighting tricks it was even more dark and gloomy in person.

Shades of brown, brown and oh yeah, brown!

Needless to say we lightened things up. Drumroll please….

One Room Challenge - Decor To Adore 006

Every corner received a makeover.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 053

The blue leather Chesterfield sofa pairs happily with the estate sale rug.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 015

As well as the antique Chinese chest which is a family heirloom.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 141

It’s topped with a tray that features a Panamanian map which is where Mr. Décor was born.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 128

Happy little memories gathered together.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 136

Sweet Guy asked for “lots of red in the room”.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 032-002

Longtime readers might recognize the wee stepstool now used as an end table. It received a new coat of red paint.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 069

The built ins were such fun to decorate.

One Room Challenge - Decor To Adore 021-001

They hold favorite books and treasures.

One Room Challenge - Decor To Adore 036

The bookcase on the left represents Mr. Décor.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 005

Small trinkets from generations past were also included. The radio belonged to my Grandpa Ingalls and still works.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 097

The bookcase on the right embodies Sweet Guy.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 047

It includes Great Grandpa Gunn’s old Panamanian lantern and a happy clown bank that belonged to Mr. Décor’s mother.

One Room Challenge - Decor To Adore 023

They are joined by a vintage 3D viewer that belonged to my mother, Karen.

One Room Challenge - Decor To Adore 029

Simple linen drapes (from our former living room) and new bamboo blinds let other elements in the room shine.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 088

Such as the tartan pillows and throws which are a nod to Clan Gunn and a perfect touch for the holidays.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 114

An accent of silver reminds us of the dear nanny goat that lived at our home on Crete (Greece). The Panama tin used to contain typewriter ribbon but it is now repurposed to hold matches for the softly glowing candle.

One Room Challenge-Decor To Adore 100

It truly is a room that tells our story.

HI Laura! Oh, my goodness! Your family room is gorgeous! What a beautiful room and the bones are fantastic. Love the soft color you painted the walls and the white washing of all of the wood looks gorgeous! You home is much more grand than our new/old house we've just bought but I see we're doing some of the same things - painting that ole dark wood white! Love it. I've painted a couple of rooms in a blue shade almost like yours! :) Slow down now! I can't keep up with you! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia :)

What a great transformation, Laura. How hard you worked and how well this all came together. Love the white and bright. And the chesterfield and rug are a match made in decorator heaven. Love the personal touches, but please explain how a vintage silver dish reminds you of a nanny goat in Crete?

Hi Laura, Oh I do LOVE this makeover!! I've meant to visit sooner; when you showed the sofa you had chosen earlier, I immediately loved it. Chesterfield is so classic, and so is leather.

You've thoughtfully combined many elements to make this a warm, inviting room -- masculine enough to appeal to the guys in your home, yet still cozy enough for the women too. I love the feel of an English (or Scottish) country house that you've created. I especially love the cozy plaid throws and the beautiful rug, Laura. I've been "mad for plaid" for the past several years, and I finally purchased a wool tartan blanket online from Scotland; I hope it arrives soon! :)

This really is a great makeover, Laura; I can't wait to see you make the house yours, one room at a time. Have a great weekend!

Hugs,

Denise at Forest Manor

WOW! What a transformation, Laura! For a lot of people (me), the photos of those dark rooms would keep me moving right on to the next listing! You have certainly done a masterful job of turning a sow's ear into a silk purse. The family room is so beautiful -- filled with memories and warmth.

Laura, Your expertise is showing! I hope you have this before and after in your professional portfolio. Where do I begin? So light and airy yet not overly feminine -- a true family room! The rug is priceless. My favorite piece {one I've already seen in your other home} is the monogramed chair you reupholstered. The shelves are treasure troves. I love that one includes a souvenir from summer vacation on Cape May! This room is truly magazine worthy. Now, when can you do the Fairfield House family room? Your Friend, Deborah
