“Let My Love Open The Door” Valentine Wreath

As the month of January draws to a close, complete with overcast skies and dreary weather, I found myself wanting a bit of happiness and color. I set out to create a happy and welcoming entry for Valentine’s Day.

vday 008

I first looked to see what I had on hand: a bit of open weave burlap I bought on clearance last fall, Christmas clearance red  ribbon and a wire wreath form.  It was a start.

vday 012

I began constructing the wreath in the same way I shared in this tutorial:

wreath 066

I thought maybe threading the ribbon through the burlap would be cute. (Holy time waster!) It wasn’t quite right. So I tried adding in some other red and white ribbon.  I only got half way through when I decided it was an epic fail.

“When everything feels all over
When everybody seems unkind
I'll give you a four-leaf clover
Take all the worry out of your mind"

v day 002-001

So I pulled everything apart. Sometimes creativity happens that way. But you can’t give up. You might need a little Pete Townsend to bring back the spark.

By adding in some red burlap ~ suddenly ~ everything worked!

“Release yourself from misery
There's only one thing gonna set you free
That's burlap
That's burlap”

vday 018
In the meantime I had gotten down the small bin of Valentine décor and found some old wooden hearts I have had for years.

vday 011

They came complete with a key and begged to be tied on with a big burlap bow.

“I have the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today you'll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say”

vday 020

Oh the front entry was singing now!

“Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart”

Sometimes it takes an epic fail before you find true love,

Cute As A Button Valentine Mantle and Garland

Earlier this week I took a break from studying and decorated the center space of our living room entertainment center. As we don’t have a fireplace this space has become a faux mantle or “fantle” of sorts in our home.

vday 178

As I began piling on the doilies, lace and paperbacks there were a few spots that needed just a bit of something more. The darling button garland that Donna from Funky Junk created back in December came to mind.

vday 184

Pearl and cream colored buttons worked perfectly with the vintage white milk glass.

I also punched out a few paper hearts and tacked them to twigs nestled amidst the roses

vday 169

Bottles of buttons and pearls completed the look. Almost.

vday 170

After taking the above photo I decided that the sides of the entertainment center needed doilies too. :)

vday 192

Then of course I had to add my own spin to Donna’s lovely creation which is made simply with buttons and ornament hooks.

I spied this red felt garland at the dollar store and knew it would be perfect for adding a touch of red whimsy to our dining room area. As I had the buttons on hand this project only cost a whopping $2.

vday 001

I hung the heart button garland from our dining room chandelier.

vday 144

I’ll reveal the rest of the space next Monday.

vday 142-001

Simple but happy.

vday 178-001

Have a love filled Monday!

Sometimes God Says “Not Now”

When we become wives, and even more so mothers, we often experience some form of self sacrifice almost every single day.
It is generally on a small scale: “You need 2 dozen cupcakes for tomorrow’s PTA back sale? Sure, I can do it. I’ll just cancel my long overdue hair appointment.”

But maybe there are times that we have major opportunities ~ big dreams and heartfelt desires that deep down we know we have to squelch. Maybe not forever, but in that moment.

It’s in us to demand what we want.

Society today tells us, even yells loudly “You can have your cake and eat it too.”

Even though we hear our conscience, our inner Jiminy Cricket, saying “It’s not a good idea…”
We then do it anyway and there are, most often, disastrous results.

In our youth when we ignored God’s whisperings and things would go terribly wrong we perhaps even had the audacity to ask “Why?”

Why Me!!!If we are smart, as we get older we also become wiser and learn to listen.

There are of course times that God may issue a firm “No.”

It’s hard to accept, but once we do, most often life moves on and as a rule, down the road, we end up being so THANKFUL He said “No” and that we listened.

But when He says “Not now”  I imagine that we all would like to believe we are like this:

But truthfully, “Not now” is perhaps even worse than a “No” if you are someone who is short on patience.

Instead of a gracious acceptance we may begin to pester God with another question.

“Why” becomes “WHEN?”

“Can I have it now?”

“How about today?”

This has to make me wonder if God thinks we are a little too much like Veruca Salt.

Oh my.

What I have found is when we graciously accept “Not now” and down the road it transforms into “Yes, this is the time” the blessings we encounter pour out like nobody’s business.

As for inspiration it’s not hard to visualize acceptance.

“The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.” ~Lamentations 3:25
“Wait for the Lord. Be strong. Let your heart be strong. Yes, wait for the Lord.” ~ Psalm 27:14

Closet Organization For Kids

I don’t know about you, but keeping my kids closets clean is a constant battle.

lego 013

When we moved in 6 months ago I just kind of unpacked and shoved it all in willy nilly. Time has not helped matters.

lego 003

I often hear the refrain “I’m bored” and I think the toy chaos contributes to that.

lego 001

The biggest issue was Lego’s. Sweet Boy LOVES Legos. But looking at this overflowing, unorganized bucket it really does not provide much inspiration. Over the recent Christmas vacation I sat the bucket on a white blanket, provided a few plastic containers and told him to separate the Lego’s by color. This was not a quick task. My living room floor was covered in Lego’s for about 3 days.  I had to nag just a wee bit. :)

office 023

I found some great storage containers at Wal Mart. While they measure just 10” x 6” x 7” each bin held a ton of Lego’s.

lego 013-001

A total of 3 containers fit nicely across his shelf. Art supplies were gone thru and purged as well as clothing.

lego 014

His long sleeve shirts were somewhat arranged by color, as well as casual, then dressy. Short sleeves were arranged in the same manner and were put on different hangers.

lego 019

So a few of you might be thinking, “Yeah, but I bet the other side of the closet is still a disaster.”

lego 020

The top shelf is devoted to his finished Lego creations (like the White House) and his pants were arranged beginning with jeans then church pants. The boy is definitely mad for plaid. At least once a month we have a discussion about not wearing plaid shorts with plaid shirts. :)

lego 026

lego 028

Of course I have saved the worst area in need of organizing for last. I’m hoping to organize my craft space before the end of January. I keep putting it off ~ it’s that horrific. :)

So for now I’ll just rest on the laurels (or is it Laura’s :) of Sweet Boy’s closet.

I Adore These Shoes!

Yesterday I was cruising the aisles of T.J. Maxx and spotted these B. Makowsky shoes. Cute style, $19.99. Instant love! Alas the 6 1/2 size was a wee bit small and there were no size 7’s. Boo!

If you happen to be in T.J. Maxx and spot these in my size I will happily reimburse you, pay for shipping and possibly give you my firstborn. :)

What do you have to have right now?

Oh The Places You’ll Go ~ DTA Style

In December the Fashionista graduated from college. I shared with you that the gift I gave her made her cry. You of course wanted to know what it was.

First off I need to tell you how this gift came about. Over two years ago, while at a garage sale, I found a really wonderful, large vintage atlas of the United States. I think I paid a quarter for the atlas and there it sat, in a closet, until last month.

Our girl told us that we had done so much for her already that she did not want a graduation gift. I know. God love her. But I could not let the day go completely unmarked.

I began by separating the atlas from it’s binding. Measured marks were made and ring holes were created with a crop a dile.

These two steps are time consuming but make the album easier to decorate and the finished pages turn more smoothly.

office 030

I have always told my children that their dreams, plans and goals are wonderful. Once you reach one, you strive for another.

Since my girl was a teenager she has had a dream of making a long summer road trip visiting our wonderful country with all its history and charm. As she completed college her thoughts turned to making this trip a reality and I wanted to show my support. So I transformed the atlas into something she can record her plans, and ultimately her adventures, in.

I included a few of her favorite literary and cinema classics such as “On The Road” and “Easy Rider”. No doubt she’ll eat in wonderful old diners with red checked tablecloths.

office 033

The album has tons of pages that are totally interactive with pockets, pull outs and PSA.

office 035

Happy travel song lyrics were also included. Come on, you know you know this one.

office 036

Because everyone should go to Walley World.

office 040

My dear friend Meri helped me so much. She is the graphics queen. I told her I needed vintage images. She went one better and created this darling page. The suitcase opens and you can store treasures inside.

office 038

While this page looks simple, it took hours of work.

office 041

I researched what kitsch each state had to offer and typed it up.

office 043

Each state has a corresponding picture. So now she knows that when she arrives in say…Kansas…that she must visit the World’s Largest Ball of Twine!

office 046

There are several empty pages that she can add in her own personal photos and I had everyone at her graduation party sign The People of America page. :)

office 047

Are you ready to see her favorite page?

office 049

It’s actually two pages at the very end. It tells her:

office 052

… to keep in mind…

office 051

…but the best part…

office 060

…is her fur babies cheering her on!

office 048

The large album was placed inside a pristine blue vintage suitcase.  The inside pockets were filled with maps, gas cards, and other travel necessities. The handle was embellished with a giant white tulle bow. Attached was this tag. It’s really all anyone needs to know when traveling.

For my eagle eyed readers:

Yes, the leftover atlas glossary pages were used to create the Parisian New Years Eve party and also papered the back of the hutch. As you know, nothing goes to waste with me. :)
