F.I.L. ~ Up A Creek, But I Have A Paddle

Welcome to this week’s Fall In Love (F.I.L.) linky party!

I am currently up a creek. I have no fewer than five fabulous home improvement projects in various stages of completion. Did you get that? Various stages of completion versus completed

projects 009

First up, I am still in the midst of unpacking the 8 million boxes of stuff I brought home from my dear mom and dad’s home. One thing that I pulled out of my brother’s “to be trashed” pile was this awesome paddle from a long departed row boat.

projects 013

I knew instantly what I would do with it: fill in the horizontal space above Sweet Boy’s closet. Planes, trains, automobiles and now…boats. But how to hang the paddle in a cute and cheap manner has escaped me. I am still searching for a solution. Ideas? Anyone? Anybody? Bueller?

projects 015

I also began decorating my front porch for fall. Then I had to stop because the temperature in Phoenix decided to rise again and real pumpkins don’t like 105 degree weather. For the record, neither do I.

projects 003

Ditto for all the mum’s and zinnia’s I just planted that will now probably die. :(

projects 005

The slipcover project I told you about last Friday still looks the same as I wait for a special upholstery foot for my sewing machine. It’s back ordered 3 ~ 5 weeks.

birthday 050

While I was waiting I gave some dated tv trays a makeover. The finished trays cried out for a coat of wax. My search had me at Lowe’s, Home Depot and Wal Mart but I struck out. I could find “natural~ for light wood” and “dark ~ for dark wood” but not a single can of “clear wax  for painted furniture” could be found. Where is Mr. Miyagi when you need him?

Then there is all kinds of crazy organizational goodness lurking behind this seemingly average medicine cabinet mirror. But, I am having some issues that I don’t want to “label” at this time. (hee hee)

So instead, let’s see what you’ve done this week.

Hi Laura, I have those kinds of weeks too! Looking forward to seeing them completed.

Have a wonderful day,

I thought that myriad projects in various stages of non-completion was perfectly normal!
The boat oar: rope wrapped around the handle in two places, knotted and hung. First thing that comes to mind. . .

I DO hope it begins to cool down soon. I just can't get into fall when it's THIS hot!
Happy Wednesday(in the truest Pooh bear sense)!

Laura, I know what you mean about heat and pumpkins. It's still too hot here in Georgia to put out pumpkins..for more than about 5 minutes. :)
Thanks for the invitation to your FIL party and thanks for hosting. I'm happy to join in all the fun, and now I'm your newest follower.

Hi Laura, thanks so much for inviting me and for hosting. Your life of unfinished projects sounds simliar to mine. Every room in my home has something going on and always another reason to not get them done. But i'll get to them one day...for now I'm enjoying the the fall! Hope it cools down for you soon!

Hi Laura, I feel your pain. I also have a ton of unfinished projects I get to go home and look at everyday. I still have not finished my bathroom has been at a stand still for over two months (ughh)and I have about ten projects going on in the master bedroom, i.e. making curtains, painting doors and trim, etc. but I am making progress and it sounds like you are too. That's whats important!

On a lighter note, I love the boat paddle. I've never hung a boat paddle but I have hung plenty of fishing rods. For your paddle you may have to put several nails in the wall, some below the paddle and some above the paddle to hold it in place. They would have to be sticking out the wall quite a ways so they would have to be pretty long. There is also the choice of landscaping staples. They are long and look like big staples. However you would be able to see them more than just using nails. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Ps. I had suggested you paint your living room so your drapes blend in more. Sorry to hear you can't paint. Understand completely. Wow 20
foot ceilings. Boy I bet your utility bills are out of this world, lol. I am having the same trouble with our stairwell. It is VERY tall and I am afraid of heights. It desperately needs painting as the previous owners thought pepto bismal pink was "PURTY". So yes, I still have a pepto bismal pink stairwell and it will probably be that way until I get over my fear of heights because I can't afford to hire out either. Anyway, I'm sure you (we both) will figure something out. Have a fantastic day.

On a row boat there are the u shaped thingys that the oar sits in. I would see if there was a way to screw those into the wall. You would need 2...but that would look cool. Just an idea....

Would you consider showing how to decorate a fireplace mantel or hosting a link up featuring fireplace mantel? I am always at a loss as to what to do with mine and would love to see a lot of them to get some ideas.

That paddle is going to be fabulous, he will enjoy the history too, I am sure.

Since I don't change decor until Christmas, ever, I out still out of season. Oh, lawdy, if you could see the unfinished 'things' here ... still looking for a counter top, yup! I sure am. Maybe I'd better get busy.

Have a great week ~

Can I say that I just "adore" this post without being too cutesy?

I am just like you with the VARIOUS incomplete projects. I have decided that it's my way of coping with some stuff going on in my life. If I'm too busy going from thing to thing, I can't dwell.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I love the paddle. That is exactly the type of thing I love to see in a home. LOVE it.

I totally understand! So many projects, so little time!

Thanks for the invitation to join your party and for being a gracious hostess.

I hope you will join Potpourri Friday! Linkup beings Thursday afternoon.

I planted my zinnias too and have them shaded part of the afternoon as well as my geraniums. Mums look beautiful at the nursery but they won't last long as you say from this heat. Pray for rain this weekend. Have a great day.

I cannot help thinking of a few things for that oar... Have you ever seen those "hands" that you can use to hang up a robe, etc...?? If you could find those, it might be fun to make it look like those hands are holding up the oar. Eh... I am sure you will come up with something fabulous. Wish you could be here to lend some ideas for decorating our home... fresh and waiting for pictures, decor, etc... Finally painted and have half of our furniture. Getting there. Think of you often. Hugs!!!

Hi Laura! This is such a great party, & I've joined in on the fun! I'm a fellow "Zoney" living in Gilbert & cannot wait for enough of a cool-down to be able to decorate my front entry area. Maybe we could do a "Rain/Cool-Down Dance" .....LOL!

Hence the reason I have not yet linked up...yet. UGH! I will complete something in the 3 days before this week's party closes.

Regarding your oar; I used something like this ...

Hope it helps!

You are a brave girl tackling that many projects at once. I have a suggestion for the boat paddle... A baseball bat holder. I don't remember where I was but, I saw one for sale. Has a nice large area to rest the paddle & then you could disquise it if you wanted with rope & fishing lures or whatever theme you chose to go with it. Just my idea...
Have a great weekend.

Monday I spent with MIL goin' to the doctor and takin' her shoppin'.

Tuesday I spent workin' round the Ponderosa.

Wednesday went to Hubs cousin' funeral in Gainsville, what a beautiful drive that was.

Today I tied the big limb that fell in the yard a couple weeks ago that Hubs hasn't had a chance to move to the lawnmower and drug it outta the yard and into the pasture then mowed my acre.

God bless and have yourself a terrific Thursday!!!

Dang you ladies are all so busy! I bought some tiny pumpkins today, but they will probably turn into soup tureens before they would ever make it outside! I'd use some fishing tackle for the oar with painted nails, but that's probably the cheapo way to go...Looking forward to next week!

Laura - this is great! I am needing some fall inspiration!
Thank you!
Have a pretty day!

Look at all those projects...maybe it is a good thing I don't sew or do much crafting. I would never catch up! I actually did put out my Halloween stuff today, but that just required moving and shifting around the fall items. Your little guy's picture is adorable. I love it.

Oh Fun Party! We are lame here. I just can't seem to get inspired for fall. I'm trying though. :) Maybe next week? :P
