Desperate Housekeeping~A trifle hilarious!

Delicious yellow cake made from scratch, strawberry preserves and real whipped cream. It was indeed, quite delicious I must say. But there is a story about this desert and how it parallels life and reality. My friend Jackie threatened to turn me into the blogging police if I didn’t write a post about it.

Trifle 022

I have a friend whose grandmother recently passed away. I responded to this heartfelt loss as women have for centuries, I decided to bake a cake for her. Not just any cake, but her favorite: pineapple upside down cake.  Let me assure you that there was no boxed cake mix involved. There wasn’t even canned pineapple, only fresh ingredients. It was the REAL deal through and through. The prep work took a good hour. Long before the timer went off, my house was enfolded by the most aromatic, wonderful smells. I went to go pull my cake out of the oven and it was then that DISASTER struck! You know how the top layer (that is actually on the bottom of the pan) is created by a yummy mixture of butter and brown sugar? Well I am here to tell you that it can be quite slippery. So much so that as I pulled the cake out of the oven it took on a life of its own. My masterpiece decided to try and make a run for it out of the pan and literally became airborne, proceeding to do a mid air 360. It was as if the event was put on slow motion and somehow I managed to do a culinary ballet of catch and it PLOPPED back into my cake pan and looked like this:

Trifle 004

Have you ever cried over cake? I almost did. Because truth be told I really didn’t have the time to make this cake, let alone another one. I had school projects, work deadlines, soccer practice and dinner to still contend with. Crumbs were EVERYWHERE!  The wind was so knocked out of my sails that I just turned off my oven, closed the door and took Sweet Boy to practice. As we were returning home he turned to me, as a previous witness to the tragedy, and said “I am so sorry about your cake. What are you going to do?” It was then that I decided to do what women have for centuries when given lemons. You make a trifle. But what about the mess that I had no time to clean up?

Enter in the Dachs O Matic 360.

Trifle 005

That’s right, I got my precious pup to do a portion of the dirty work. Martha Stewart would be horrified, I know.

Trifle 018

PETA let me assure you that no Dachshunds were harmed during this ahem, alternative to actual housekeeping. Indeed the action shot proclaims that this was one happy and satisfied pup.

 Trifle 014

Ok, I’m ready. Let me have it. Take away my apron~please.

sorry to laugh, but this was hilarious, Laura! love the swish of pink puppy tongue--indeed one satisfied pup. i'm sure the trifle was great. we once accidentally made a chocolate disaster for a birthday party--fortunately it was a Bob the Builder party anyway, so we just added construction equipment!

lemons into lemonade again!

It is funny now, but I have been there to throw down the oven mits and walk away! Rudi is just precious licking up the crumbs!

Those shots are priceless!! What a good idea that was. I'm sorry your cake didn't turn out but that trifle does look yummy.

I know exactly what you mean. I use to make everything from scratch, but those years are over.

Our Daughter loves pineapple upside down cake and every Christmas I make sure to make her one. This year half the cake decide to come out and the other did not. Lucky that I make two at the same time, one for her and one for us. I kept that one and gave her the other which came out perfect.

Hey, Laura! As my Nan used to say, "If it's ugly, it's got to be good!" :) Kudos to you and your efforts in "Kitchen Stadium!"

heehee... Laura, I think many of us women have been in this same spot.

Brownie 101 for a Superbowl party ended up Brownies on the floor 101. What a hot mess to have cleaned up. And since it was chocolate, no doggie-matic was going to get this delight.

Maggie now guards the oven when I bake brownies.

PS.. this yummy creation looks just grand.

All I can say is, "if only I had a dog!" You're a riot...and what a great idea to save the day by creating a trifle!

I once lost my pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dinner. It was not pretty...so cute the doggie cleaning up the mess. We had some friends that had 3 dachsaunds and they were her prewash for the dishwasher!

Your funny post was a great way to start my day. Thank goodness for doggie tongues! And I bet Martha's dogs get to clean up some delicious disasters at her house too.

Laura!

This was hysterical. The only thing missing was an apple in your sweet dogs mouth after you fattened him up on cake.
I do feel your pain but what a wonderful 'save'. And your little man is appropriately dubbed -- such a sweet boy!

I laughed out loud when I read your post. I needed that this morning! My dogs frequently reap the reward of my cooking disasters! My mother would be mortified if she knew I told that! A couple of weeks ago, they got to eat beef stew. How can ANYONE mess up beef stew, you ask? Oh, I can find many ways! I'm a relative late comer to the cooking world. Got married in my late 30s and before that just never took the time to learn. I have fairly regular disasters as I am learning how to navigate the kitchen and new recipes! :-)

Thanks for the good humor!

This is too cute. I am so sorry about the mishap, but the way you told it is so hysterical. And your ingenuity is awesome. I have to remember this dog trick the next time I have a spill in my oven. They already take care of the floor! :-)

This was so funny to read. I think you did a great save and I'm sure it tasted delicious and your friend was pleased. Now wasn't that the goal anyway?!

You poor thing. At least the dog won in the tragedy. Ha.

I dumped a sweet potato pie in the bottom of my oven once. Talk about A MESS!!!! It was HORRIBLE.

Eh, I would have done the same thing. No harm done! Actually, sometimes when I'm at someone's house and they don't have a dog, and I drop something, I'm a bit at a loss as to what I should do. I'm so used to just having the dog snatch it up.

I liked you before, Laura, now I love you! That was just the best story! You surely are someone who knows how to make lemonade out of lemons! AND you loved your dog in the process! Just perfection! Suzie

I love all the images in the webbing post. Awesome collection of ideas, I must say! Have a great trip. You must be getting so excited. :)

Hahahaha! I am so glad I'm not the only one who has dogs that help with the "clean up" - and I have to confess that I have done something similar. I broke a cake trying to ice it once and turned it into ice cream cake, which tasted MUCH better than the original cake alone! The trifle idea is brilliant, though.

I am very sorry about your friends loss. Thank you for sharing a truly amusing anecdote.

LOL, While drinking my morning coffee, I starting reading your blog. Now I have coffee ALL over and up my nose. Sorry for laughing, but brings back memories. I made cupcakes once for a teacher retiring,I though I would write a goodbye wish out of cupcakes. While answering the door for my ride my sheepdog decided to help himself to dessert. My company starting laughing while I was in shock. LOL. Love and Prayers, Suzanne

OH! I'm glad you caught it and your Dachs-o-matic didn't get the whole thing!
