A Friday Freebie to help get you organized in 2009!

This is Martha Stewart's craft room. Images like this make my heart pound and my palms sweat. For one moment I think "I need this~I want this." But then reality sneaks back and I begin to wonder just WHO exactly is crafting in this room, Casper?

Reality comes in the form of Martha's friend Rosie, who is also famous for her craft room.

But, back to delicious eye candy. I love how empty paint tins are used to keep this desk area tidy. The desk is just a painted piece of plywood attached to shelf brackets. Perfect for a small area.

I like this idea: use pieces of vintage pottery to corral your bathroom necessities. They have placed some smooth stones under the soap for drainage.

This idea is one of my personal favorites. But of course I like to put a twist on it. Step one: find an old dresser on the side of the road, Goodwill or someones basement. Step two: pull out the drawers. Step three: attach casters purchased at a hardware store to the bottom of the drawers. Step four: slide your ultra cool, ultra cheap storage under the bed.

I was wishing sweet boy's closet looked like this. But he owns more than 3 pairs of jeans.

So on a a good day, his closet looks like this. Toys on the floor, not in the bins.

When I clean I like to pull everything out so that I can vacuum. I also take a damp cloth or new fabric softener sheet and wipe down the baseboards. Old dollar store bags get packed full of toys that are delivered to children living (temporarily) at the domestic violence shelter.

I even decided to paint.

Yet after all that work, the after picture still looks like a before shot. Someday when I live in my end all, be all home there will be built in closet organizers. But for now this works.

Onto Friday Freebie!

Back in August I attended a conference and was given a very nice planner. I don't use planners as I am a member of the small purse club, but I know someone out there in blogland does.
This accordion file was jazzed up with a few rhinestones. It's really cute AND... it is PACKED FULL of scrapbooking supplies, buttons, vintage charms, bits and bobs, ribbon and candy.

Usually, I love for anyone and everyone to leave me comments, but this contest is only open to individuals who are "Adorable People". First timers and Lurkers, you know you're adorable, so become a follower of this blog today. :)
I will select a winner in a few days. Good luck!
UPDATE: Congratulations to Jessica of The Pelkey's. She was selected by the Random Number Generator as the Get Organized Freebie winner.

I do love her craft room, but agree. . . Who is really using that?? :o) Smiles. Granted, it perfectly shows off many of the Martha Stewart Craft Line that I have seen at various stores (ok, mainly Wal-mart these days!)

I hope I am considered an Adorable People! Count me in, if so!

I love the craft room post. I posted my craft room, too, so again, great minds are thinking alike!

Did I mention declutter in my New Year's resolutions? I was hoping to declutter one thing (think shelf not closet) a day! You did a great job!
I love such a harmonicafile filled with fun stuff!

Yes Martha Stewart, lol. She has wonderful ideas, but indeed WHO crafts in a room like that. You should see MY craft room, or better yet, NOT see mine, lol

I would love to enter that give away, please.
I love items like that, planners and all the extra's.

hugs from Marian

I'm a first-timer to your blog. Thanks for the chance to win! And thanks for visiting my blog and entering the giveaway. Good luck to us both.

I always love seeing other people's craft organization. I need to figure out a better systaem for mine especially as I don't have a "craft room" yet.

One problem with the ""Adorable People" thing is that only people with blogger accounts can sign up for it. I do follow you on Google Reader. I did go ahead and sign up for it to enter the contest, but I comment via my WordPress account because it is my main blog.

Love your organizational posts! :) This one is great. Hope you are having a lovely Friday!

Wow, I'm glad I found your blog today! What a very nice give away from a very talented blogger.

Your too funny! A crafty "ghost"! Well Martha probably has someone that cleans up after her. I've never seen Rosie's craft room so I'm going to go take a look. Maybe I'll get some ideas for mine.

Glad to know your closet before and after photos look the same - like mine! I keep trying, but Martha I am not!

Hmmm, I think I'm adorable! Love the drawer idea too!

As you know I'm in the process of organizing and unpacking my craft room. Thank you for the inspiration. Mine could look like Martha's (or similar) if I didn't actually use it. And I had "people". hahaha Rosie's craft room looks more like a barn. It's huge. Mimi

There is no way my craft room is going to look like that! I wish though. Maybe when the new one is done. Sad part is I'm trying to organize it, but it's not really happening.

The boy's closet looks way better than my girl's. Hers is a wreck. I'm afraid I might get lost if I go near her room. :)

Good morning, dear Laura. Thank you for the photos of Martha Stewart's craft room. There were some very good ideas, especially for small space organizing. I have a little sewing room, and I ust admit that it is kept in very good order. I abhor clutter. However, sewing is a *messy* business and when I am in the midst of a sewing project the room hardly looks pristine. I have to tidy things up at the end of the day, but the next day it goes back to looking like a whirlwind victim. Thank you for leaving your kind comment on my blog. I earnestly pray that your new year is your best year yet!

Melissa Wertz said...

You are right, "Who crafts in this room?" I like your ideas. I need to go tackle DD's room. She is a tad tomboyish with a feminine flair.

Love the craft room post.

Laura,

My craft room will never look as good as Miss Martha's...

I wonder if Martha ever really crafts in there or if the pics are just for her magazine?!? Hmmm...it is pretty though!!! While my room is not so pretty, I love it nonetheless!!!

Martha always inspires me, but I could never be that organized. Maybe your planner would help? Probably not!! LOL

I use vintage pottery for storage all the time. Mostly out of necessity because it is what I have and I'm too cheap to spend the money on the expensive storage like Martha's. But I would use it if I had it (hint to hubby).

It took me awhile to figure out who the adorable people were - what fun to discover your list - much better than "followers" - I'm going to have to think about mine, too.

Don't enter me in the draw -- but I wanted to comment on your organizing schemes - always great in January!

I have you on my favorites so I think you must consider me adorable!!!

I am looking for one of those by the road dressers- I think we all have the same idea and they keep getting snatched up before I arrive!!!

It is funny how the new year brings back the desire to get organized again!!! Hope to finish my guest room closet and make it a pretty little storage place for all those things I am not using at the moment and useable for guests too- We'll see how successful I am!

What a great post to get us all organizing. You did a great job with yor son's closet. Painting always refreshes everything. I am so excited about your idea with the drawers on casters. I have an old dresser that has been waiting to be used for something. Thank you !!!

I think your 'after' looks pretty good! Martha watch out =]

I can appreciate Martha's room but creativity is messy. I'd waste too much creative time keeping it all so tidy.

This craft room made my heart beat faster.. then I too had to stop and remember Casper does not live at this house.. The paint cans were a great idea. I also liked the drawers and coasters....
I know you have visited me I think on the tour at Christmas...but I think this is the first time for me to your blog. I am impressed:) About being adorable...well my sweet daughter is when she isn't highjacking my blog...actually she still is and since as she puts it...She is the fruit from my loins:) make adorable could in a long shot count.
opps that is an inside joke unless you come and visit again.
I do know I would love to be more organized this year and would like to be entered into your giveaway!
I haven't added many followers on my blog but would love to do that also...I will have to find out how that works. lol See I need more organizational skills.

I'm a lurker also, but wanted to say how much I enjoyed this post and your blog. I'm not sure I rank myself in the adorable category (but I'm sure my cat thinks so...especially when I'm feeding her :)...and I don't really have a use for the planner as I just bought a new one! Even still, you're Martha , ghost crafting, statement could not be ignored! Crafting, by it's very nature, is a messy business. Thanks for the great inspiration and the fun.
Warmly,
Tracey

You are such a girl after my own heart...why can't my house be all Martha Stewart-like...so organized and crafty. That's what I'd love! MY reality is living with two boys (3 if you count my husband). Today I spent 6 hours cleaning out their toys...at one point, I was ready to throw everything away. When I saw your closet photos, I thought I might be having a flashback!!!! Went to Target to get more storage bins, and there were NO under the bed storage bins - sigh...I need one long enough to house swords and light sabers! I'm sure that won't be in the description on the side of the tote! Ha! As always, love your post!!!

I agree that as an architectural designer we do give a false sense of reality when we take photo shoots...lol!
I have yet to actually have a completed project look like that, after the clients are in!

Hi Laura,
I wouldn't dare post my closets. UGH!
They are on my list!
Just wanted to stop by and wish you a wonderful New Year!!!

Susancnw said...

Thanks for the brainstorm! I have two dressers in the garage...one of which is really pretty, but the slides are useless, but casters on them will do great. Then I can still paint the other one for my daughter's room.

I used to put my sons' dresser in their closet to free up floor space for them to play. Most of their clothes were folded in the dressers so that worked well. They just had a few hanging things and there was always room next to the dresser and above it to hang stuff.

They had bunk beds, but they also had 10K Legos so....and those lovely little micromachines in Desert Storm camo so they blended in with the berber carpet...ouch. Little tanks hurt worse than legos, trust me ;D I wish I had found an old dresser to use the drawers under their beds.

My sons continue to put their dressers in their closets as grownups. I would love to do that with my youngest daughter's dresser, but ti doesn't work.

Donna@designson47thstreet said...

I lol with the sweaty palms comment. Too funny. I truly don't think I could be comfortable with that much organization. Your son's closet looks much more like something I could live with. I think the end result is very nice!
BTW, I never could find the Nutcracker Tea. :( I'll try again next year!

Love this post on the craft rooms, I am just finishing up my new studio and it is liberating to have my own place for all of the messes I make! I like the Trofast toy storage system from IKEA, but mostly my son and daughter do the same, dump the bins of toys on the floor!! Thanks for coming by Camp Whimsy!! The Chair Rescue post is one of my favorites too and my mom cried (happily) when I gave her the Camp Whimsy glitter house! Happy New Year!!!!

I am a notebook gal... I have been using a notebook for over 25 years, when I first read Ann Ortland's book "Disciplines of a Beautiful Woman".
I call my notebook "My Brain". And if I misplace it I am hysterically yelling out "HELP ME! I LOST MY BRAIN!!!"
SO, I hope I win!!
