One Hundreth Post

This is my 100th post! In looking over my previous posts, one, entitled Divine Dressing Tables continues to get daily hits. With the belief that you would love to see more, I scoured the web for new images and information. As a token of appreciation to you for visiting my blog I am so excited to offer you an exclusive FREE giveaway valued at over $250! Read on for details…

I love this painting entitled "Morning Toilette".

The dressing table has been around for hundreds of years. In Egyptian tombs they have uncovered such tables, as well as the accessories that went with them. The Egyptians often wore wigs, makeup and scented themselves with fine oils. But it was not until the 1700's that the vanity table truly reached it's zenith in France. Beautiful tables, known as the poudreuse, from the French word for powder, were used by both men and women to apply their elaborate wigs, makeup, and jewelry. If you travel to Versailles you can see several items used by Marie Antoinette. Use of the dressing table spread to other countries by nobles wanting to be equal to or greater than France's fair queen. Here is a painting aptly entitled "The Lady at her Dressing Table".

The vanity table was also embraced by the new middle class English Victorians who topped their tables with elaborate trays, jars, bottles and brushes made from heavily cut crystal and silver. Originally sold as sets, you can often find single pieces at flea markets and online auctions such as Ebay.

In the 1930's, many Hollywood films included scenes of beautiful, young starlets preparing for a glamorous evening of dinner and dancing. Here is the lovely Jean Harlow with her fabulously fringed vanity table.

Today, the dressing table has made a dazzling comeback. I am not sure what I love most about this image~ the wonderful striped wallpaper, fancy flokati bench or the marvelous mirrored table.

I love this built in dressing area. Such luxury. A ghost chair by Philippe Starck is the perfect partner.

Does this image speak to you? I love this dressing table that was featured in Victoria with its wonderful white linen skirt topped by an antique table cloth.

I adore the idea of this painted table. You can often find similar tables and with a bit of paint and decoupage it becomes uniquely yours.

This is a beautiful image. You can recreate this image quite easily by purchasing fabric that you love and sewing up a skirt. Here are the directions.

Oh but wait! You need a dressing table to begin your project. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could win a vanity table? Perhaps something like this from Ready to Cover:

Recently, I was speaking with Ryan at Ready to Cover. Ready to Cover offers a variety of wonderful custom decorator tables, glass tops, headboards and vanity tables. He generously offered to supply a classic kidney shaped vanity table to one lucky winner. The tables come in several different sizes. The winning individual can select whatever table their heart desires and will only have to pay for the shipping.

Ready to Cover also offers the kidney shaped glass tops. This is not included in the giveaway but can be purchased very reasonably.

TO ENTER: Please visit the Ready to Cover website. Select the size vanity table that you would like to win. Then come back to the Decor to Adore blog and click on the comment section. Leave a comment with the size vanity table that you would like to win and how you would decorate your table. A winner will be selected Monday, October 20th by a random number generator. You may only enter once.

As a BONUS, if you put a link on your website announcing the contest, the winner can select a vintage vanity tray offered in my Etsy shop or I can customize a tray in any color the winner desires. I will pay for the shipping for the tray and as with all my giveaways, you will receive a few extra surprises.

Good Luck!

Ok now I'm leaving my choice of table. I had to selfishly comment to be the first one on your 100th post.

I would choose a 38x22 or 40x24 table. I would choose some delicious designer fabric maybe a loose linen or chenille damask or a chocolate houndstooth and the piping...oh my way too many choices. I would place it in my daughter's room. Every girl needs to have a place to go and feel special. Oh I hope I win, I never win anything. Good luck with all of your commentors. And thanks for such a fun post.

Ha ha! The first comment on your 100th post!! I love these dressing tables! I really like the photo of Jean Harlow...so "old Hollywood!" Also, the painted table is so cute. I like how they used the toile from the wallpaper. Of course, the blue and white skirt is fantastic. I love that combo and always look forward to "Victoria's" annual blue & white issue.
As for the table, I like the 30x18 size. I'd most likely do a full, billowy skirt (well, I'd have a seamstress do it!). I'm not sure of the color, though.
Thanks for a great post!!

Laura, I would love to win your dressing table give away! I love the image with the blue striped fabric. Please enter me in the drawing. Thank you for being so generous!

I love those tables! I especially like the striped wall paper with the round mirror one. :)
And, this is a great give a way!! I have no idea what I would do to that table! I'd probably start with... I have no idea. Paint. Yup. Paint. :)

I would choose the 36" X 20" table. I would decorate it with pink and white floral ticking fabric. I found some on ebay that I liked a lot. Thanks for the opportunity for the giveaway.

Congrats on your 100th post! I have a love for vanity tables and I enjoyed viewing all your photos of them...and the history.
I won't be entering your fab contest but I think it's a great idea. Good luck to the lucky winner!!

Love the contest!!! Tried to post, not sure it worked. Trying again. 40x24 for sure. Taffeta striped fabric in my master bathroom.
Great contest!!

Happy 100 posts! Those are some cool pics and some great ideas!!

I think I would choose the 36x20. I'm envisioning it in my redone room. When we redo our room it will be in blue and white with some yellows mixed in. I loved the flowy blue and white skirting around the vanity in that post. Something like that maybe. Though I could not be 100% until it was sitting in it's spot speaking to me. LOL

Shimmy Mom said...

I would choose the 36x20 because of where I would put it in my bedroom. I have a lovely stand up jewelry box and a full length mirror and I think I would try to find a way to group the three.

I love dressing tables, I think they are so elegant and since we just moved I haven't decorated my bedroom yet. I used to have a very ancient India inspired room and we are planning to get some new bedding in the colors of blue and brown. I want a very classic, possibly victorian or colonial feel in there. We just got a highboy dresser that we are going to repaint (it's already been painted) to match the browns and creams in the room. A vanity table would go perfect.

What a fun way to celebrate your hundreth post! I'm going to go link you from my blog right now!
*hugs*

Laura! How wonderful! Alas I must pass on this fantastic offer but will post on it on my blog and leave a link back to you. Sadly, I have no room for such a wonderful thing as my tiny cottage is quite full but I can't wait to see who wins!

Congrats on your 100th post! I love coming here to read up on decor. I find this a soothing place to settle with a wealth of information and ideas. Thanks!

Congrats on the 100th post dear!!
I would love to have the 36" x 20"
and I would decorate it with the black toile skirt... and a beautiful old dresser mirror that was my grandmothers. And paint the top a luxurious white... and place all of my gorgeous prefume bottles on top!

Thank you for the chance to dream!!
I hope you have a wonderful day!!

Congratulations on your 100th post!

This is a fantastic giveaway! I would choose the 40x24 size because I would want plenty of room for all my vanity needs! I love the skirted version and would love to do something like that. I am in the process of rethinking our master bedroom. I'm wanting to do shades of lavender with lots of silver.

I also posted about and linked to the giveaway on my blog. Fun, fun, fun!

Kimberly said...

What a cool give-away! I would LOVE the 38x22 table (30 inches tall). I would paint the top white (or I might just have a mirrored top made for it...) and try my hand at making a skirt from fabric with 1-inch wide white and pink vertical stripes. It would go in the pink guest bedroom since that's where I store all my clothes (our closes are tiny and I gave my husband the one in our bedroom).

Here's to your next 100 posts!

I stumbled across your blog from another blog and I immediately put it in my favorites. I enjoy the reading and all the good ideas you have. I am a single mother and grandmother who is trying to get back to my girly girl roots and you have many ideas I can incooperate into my home. When my daughters were little, some 30yrs ago, I had a dressing table of sorts and my daughters used to love to sit and pretend they were grownup. I would love to win this table and surprise my oldest daughter. She has done so many things for me over the years and this would be such a surprise for her. Not sure of the colors yet but I sew and do crafts so I am sure I could come up with something fantastic that would fit her. My size would be 36 x 20. Keep up the good work.

Denise O'Brien said...

I would choose the 40X24 table. I would have it decorated in pink and white for my granddaughter. We were living together and I recently moved out. She is having a difficult time adjusting to not having me sleep with her in her room at night. I would give this to her and tell her that when she misses me she can just sit at the beautiful vanity table given to her by me with much, much love. She could have this a lifetime and know her grandmother gave it to her. I could never afford to buy her one but she would know this came from nothing but love. She is 7 years old and her name is Caitlyn. She is my joy. I call her my-love.

Glenda said...

Congrats on your 100th post. I won't enter the giveaway. I simply don't have room for a vanity.
But I adore that style. I see the old movies all the time and I look at the decor and wonder what happen to the old vanities no one has them.

Ciao

Love your 100th post! I would pick the 36x20 table. It would be dressed by several of my favorite things! Beautiful black and white pics of my boys, a silver goblet with a fresh flower in it, a few crystal or sivler bees (for my name Betsy), and beautiful perfume bottles. I would use a large check of cream and a silver sage. Very billowy with a beautiful trim. Oh yeah, I would also have this new lamp I am dying for on it that has two love birds on the base.

Kim said...

I would choose the 36 x 20 table To go with my lovely new-to-me bedspread (http://eibisch.blogspot.com/2008/07/isnt-it-lov-er-ly.html), I would have to use a satin /chenille (either off white or delicate color) to cover/skirt. Above, on the wall, perhaps a slightly guilded mirror that i could drape with a lightwieght fabric.

Theresa @ Take A Sentimental Journey said...

Hi I would pick the 36 x 20 table. I am thinking of doing a bedroom makeover in blue and white toille. I would put a skirt around the table, hang a gorgeous mirror over it and accessorize the top in gorgeous antique dresser pretties.

Joy said...

30 x 18 Teen Vanity Dressing Table would be my choice simply because my room space is so petite. (Sounds better than 'small'!)

I would "dress" the dressing table in preferably a faded vintage skirting and paint the top cream.

Finally, I'd scout consignment shops and thrift stores for an old mirror to hang above it.

Amazing giveaway, by the way. :o)

Wow Congratulations 100 Posts!
And it is a great one! who can get enough of beautiful dressing tables.
I am hoping to wine the 36 x 20 Vanity Dressing Table
I have several thoughts on how I will adorn it. Im thinking option 1 is to use this beautiful pink silk with tiny pearls sewn on it that I saw. Or a beautiful lace with a solid color underneath it to highlight the lace and conceal the storage area. and of course a Venetian tri fold vanity mirror will be a must setting on top of it :)
so im keeping my toes crossed that I win!!!!!!!

Wow! What a great prize. Congrats on your 100th post by the way. :)

Just thinking about decorating that table is getting my creative juices flowing. Thinking something modern...
I would choose the 36x20 size. I have a large sized room and have a corner that is under used. This would be perfect!

36 x 20 would be my choice...and I have a perfect place for it in my bedroom!!! Thank you so much for offering this giveaway...and I love your blog. I'm so glad I found it.

Congrats on your 100th post!!

Oh boy...the 36x20 table would fit beautifully in a space by the door into my house! I've been wanting something more romantic looking than just a table...and what could be more beautiful than a stunningly decorated-with-fabric vanity table with an appropriate mirror above? I would use a fabric with roses, slightly covered with lace...and ribbon!! mmmmmm...I can see it now!!

~Blessings,

Oh my gosh, aren't they all awesome? I would love to win the 36"x20" vanity.

I would paint it in mocha with aqua trim, and do striped or harlequin print fabric in the same colors. It would put it between my window (which is dressed in brown velvet) and my bed.

Yummy! Hope I win. What fun your giveaway is!!

Sheila
When I was a young girl, I desperately wanted a dressing table. I had spotted a vintage one at an auction with my parents, and ooohh, how I wanted it.

My parents couldn't afford it, but my Father finally "caved" and built one himself. It was iffy at best, built with plywood and choppy dowels. BUT, it had a mirror and it was painted lavendar and white and I LOVED it.

Mrs. B said...

Okay, I think the 38 x 22 table would be perfect! I have some lovely cabana striped tan and white fabric that would make a great skirt. I recently bought an antique vanity that I refinished to use as a desk in my daughter's room. It was so cute I was really tepted to keep it for myself!

studiorose said...

40x24, definitely! I need a big surface for all my "stuff." These look like a ton of fun; I always did love a "blank canvas" to decorate. I think I would do mine in mosaic; beautiful soft pastel colors of broken china with floral motifs and white grout. It would be a masterpiece that I could hand down to my sweet niece and would last for generations.

What a generous give-away! Thanks for visiting my blog today. :)

AWESOME post and what a great prize!

I had a wonderful vanity table and bench that I had finished myself. When we moved, we did it ourselves with a U HAUL, from UT to CO. Some things wouldn't fit, and that was one of them... this would be awesome!

Congratulations on your "100th post" and how sweet it is of you to offer this giveaway.

My daughter has always wanted a dressing table and I would love the chance to win one for her. I would choose either a 38x22 or 40x24 table for her and would want her to pick out the fabric herself for the skirt, which I would really be happy to make for her. Her bedroom is currently in chocolate brown with red and gold accents, but she is wanting to redecorate her room and keep the chocolate brown but add a tiffany blue accent.

Thanks.

Oh, I would choose the 30x18 because I'd decorate it for my daughters' bedroom. I'd skirt it in a beautiful pink and white stripe and do the top in chocolate brown velvet with one of your beautiful trays in white. I'd decorate the tray with lots of pink vintage bottles full of my great aunt's 40 year old buttons and milk glass tea cups. I'd attach my mom's vintage dressing table mirror so the girls could use her silver-plated brush on their hair, maybe even doing the 100 strokes for shiny hair. Ahhhh. Sweet sigh of dreams.

Happy 100th!

Love your blog! I'm going to have to spend some time reading!
I would love to have the 36x20 dressing table and I would be using it my 10 year olds room so I would most likely let her pick a fabric to make a skirt for it and then put a glass top on it and let her put pictures of her friends etc. under the glass. She has a new bedroom that is still under construction so we will hopefully be decorating soon. She is saying lime green and hot pink!
I'll be putting a link to you on my blog today!
Blessings,
Jill

I'd have to go with the 30 x 18. I'd paint it and do a fabric skirt. Then my girls could fight over it. :) Congrats on your 100th post!

That 36"X20" table would be lovely with tiered gingham cascading down to the floor - in my little girls room.

I love the Jean Harlow photo too!

and... even if you went with your own post for the day - happy blogathon :)

I do not have a dressing table now but everytime I stay at a hotel I love being "spoiled" with a dressing table.

I think the 30 by 18 would be nice. I'm not much of a crafty person and know nothing about fabric but I love deep chocolate browns and jacquard prints. My bedspread is brown and blue jacquard print. I like rope piping too. :)

Tiffany said...

I love the 30x18 Teen vanity. I am in the midst of redoing my 8yo daugther's bedroom. She wants a clothing designer type room but I wanted to include a vanity in the room as I have always LOVED vanities. I would use a toile fabric, more than likely. We are going with a powder blue and chocolate brown color scheme for the room.

Frizzy and Bird said...

I would choose the 30x18 for my little girl but we honestly have no room for this beautiful table. It's been nice reading your post and getting to know you. Congrats on your 100th post and thanks for stopping by mine to comment. I hope you'll be back again sometime soon.

I would go for a 36x20. I have a bright green bedroom so I would decorate it in shades of green so that I could use it as an accept piece in my bedroom, specially since other then a bed and a night table I have no furniture in my room. I'd love to win this, it's such a fabulous prize!

Lavender n Lattés said...

What a great blog! I'm so glad you stopped by mine! I would choose the 38 x 22 size table. I'm a fan of "old Hollywood", so my table would definitely have lots of pink, gold and leopard-print! That would be so much fun!

jewelstreet said...

What a beautiful blog and a great giveaway! Whoever the winner is will be an extremely lucky one.

I would choose the 38x22. It's not too big and not too small. It would go in my newly decorated(because I would have to redo my bedroom for this great prize)bedroom. I'm very much into mid century modern and art deco so I would probably add some chrome or other shiny metal pieces. A raised up glass surface like the one in the Jean Harlow picture. I'd probably paint it in art deco colors, add some drawers with some art deco handles I've been dying to use.

I've never had a vanity table before so this would be an awesome project. I'll make sure I add a link to this too awesome contest on my site tomorrow.

I'd choose the 36X20 vanity table!

My Grandmother has a beautiful vanity table that goes with the whole bedroom set, I am actually getting that soon, I think! I remember playing in front of that vanity set when I was a little girl, thinking I was such a movie star;) LOL

I would choose the 38x22 and it would be a gift for my daughter. I would put a slirt on this table most likely in a pink with black dots. The top would be painted a solid color and I would embellish it by painting on French words or phrases. Topped off with glass to protect it! She would be ecstatic about this and I think she would even keep her room clean for awhile, lol! After all, this would help in organization!

As a decorator myself, I love the site you recommended and would choose the 36x20 or the 38x22. As a toile freak, I would drape it in that fabric and add the glass top and embed old photographs under the glass.

Great site BTW!

Congratulations! What a beautiful post it is! Absolutely gorgeous photos. I love the silk skirt; I drooled over similar silk curtains and gave up finally. Curtains are just too daunting of a task for me but I'm sure I could handle that skirt!

I like the 30x18 size and I'd do it with a two toned silk in gold/cream I think. Our bedroom is oatmeal but for a few accents of color so whatever I chose, it would be understated elegance :^)

Wonderful giveaway, my goodness!

Oh, I think that I would like a 38x22" table to go in my new guest room. What a great addition, coverd in a pink raw silk with some great beaded trim.

I'll take a 25 inch tall one! I currently have my laptop on a couple of cardboard boxes, while the table I'm supposed to have my laptop on is covered by our perpetual chess game. I would put the chess game on this table, after I let my little sweeties decoupage it with me. I'm thinking massive numbers of flowers we cut out from magazines, plus pictures of flowers they draw themselves, covered with an easy-to-clean clear finish. Thanks for the invite! Any relation to THAT Laura???

Oooo what a fun blog!!! I will be back!

Hmm..choices...I guess that I would pick the 30 x 18 Teen Vanity Dressing Table because I am living in a pretty small apartment and will be here for awhile as we finish school. What a way to dress our little place up! Hmm I would do something a little different and funky like polka dots (my husband will laugh at that one because he thinks that it is funny I love polka dots so much).

BTW thank you for visiting my blog.

sauchagirl said...

I would choose the 38x22 size. I would create a light, airy feel with tulle and light, beachy colors as that is how my room is decorated.

Thanks!

Congrats of your 100th post!

I'd pick the 36x20, I think: not too big, not too small. I would put it in my guest room with a yummy chocolate cover!

Hi, Laura, thanks for stopping by my white pumpkin post. I'm just now getting caught up from that & I wanted to come by and say hello. So nice to meet you & I don't think I've ever seen your blog before..how could that be? I'll add you to my bloglist & I would love it if you would add me to yours.

I don't have room for a vanity, since I already have one, so no need to put me in the contest. I actually have an antique French-styled kidney shaped vanity in my bedroom.

Come back & see me!

Wow - girl what a great giveaway! And congratulations on your 100th post. I thought offering the Marburger magazine was a good idea but this definitely beats it =) I'd love to be included. And I'll send you an invite for the magazine. Blessings... Polly (p.s. I'd go with the teen size since I have a house full of kids. However, it would get my victorian decor - NOT sponge bob)

oh wow! Thanks for commenting at my blog to tell me of your celegration! I would absolutely love to have the 38x22 table. Honestly I think I would put casters on it and use it for a craft table. I would definitely have to modge podge the top with a paper or maybe enven photo's. It would be fun to also paint in the colors of my DD's room - fairy tale pink & tinkerbell green. I just don't know!

The possibilities are endless. Thanks! I will defnitely put a post on my blog about this! ;)

I would choose the 30x18 because it would be for my daughter. I recently saw how someone decoupaged fabric onto a piece of furniture. I would choose some pretty fabric, probably from Michael Miller, and adhere it to the vanity.

What a great giveaway! Thank you!

Hi Laura :)

This is a fantastic giveaway!!

Let's see..
I would choose the 30 x 18 Teen Vanity Dressing Table, because Annie needs one badly. Right now it's all about polka dots for her, so I would cover it in a material with them. Then use different colored accessories to match the colors of the dots. I think it would be a really fun addition to her room and later when she grows out of the dots, I can change it :)

I loved the history of the dressing table. Gorgeous pics too!

hugs,

Thanks for visiting me today through SITS. Happy 100th posting!
One of the first "girly" toys I bought for my only daughter was a Fisher Price vanity table. She loves it and sits at it often and combs her hair and just stares, so I would have to pick the 18x30 teen table in your fabulous give away. I'd probably decorate it in some sort of whimsical fabric with lots of pinks, or flowers. I just know she'd love it, and it'd be something she'd grow with years to come and we could change it together as she got older and developed her own tastes. :) What a fun give away!

Congrats on your 100th post!

Oh my, I can't resist a good give away. I would choose the TEEN (30x18) dressing table for my little girl's room. She would absolutely ADORE it. How would I finish it...I think it would serve as inspiration to redecorate her room in a more "big girl" fashion. I am thinking aqua and brown, damask, polka dots...I would have to search for the perfect fabric, and find a cute bench I could cover to match!

Happy 100th post! What a great way to celebrate! Thanks for stopping by my blog and letting me know about all of the fun.

I love the photo of Jean Harlow - so incredibly glamorous. And the built in made me *sigh* just beautiful.

If I would be so lucky as to win, I would actually choose the "teen" size. The numbers are escaping me at the moment. My daughter will soon be moving in to her own room (she is only 1 but is a twin and shares with her brother at the moment). I would use this for her room, paint it and skirt it with tulle in a fun color so that it is fun for her and she can feel texture. She loves the tu-tu I made her and I think she would love this too!

Thanks for a fun giveaway!

Congrats on your 100th post!!!! And thanks for coming by and showing some comment love.
I remember this old wooden vanity with mirror that my Grandma had in her house. My Mom and all her sisters used it one by one. Then I got it. I remember it always being so cool to sit down and put my make up on in high school.
I don't have decorating in my blood, I usually rely on friends to help me through that. Or allow my daughter to do it. But if I had to choose one it would be the 30X18 teen vanity dressing table. I would so love for my daughter to be able to have one just like I did growing up. And I'm sure she would decorate it to the tee.

What a generous giveaway! You sure know the right folks!

I would choose the 30x18 inch table.

We are preparing to make the spare room (aka storage heap) in our house a play room for our daughter and any new ones that may come along. This table would be a fun addition that would certainly grow with her.

I would decorate the table to match the new decor--which I haven't decided on yet! I have been thinking of using soothing blues and greens with white accents. I would probably paint it white and make a skirt which would, of course, coordinate with the drapes and pillows.

Thanks for such an informative post, too!

Oh how fun! I love that these are all ready to go and you get to decorate it yourself. I would love to win the 30 x 18 Teen Vanity Dressing Table to put into my daughter's room.

I saw a gorgeous vanity table with pink fabric and shiny pink tulle around it and I'd LOVE to copy the idea. It'd be perfect in her room.. or maybe I'll just make it match MY room and keep it for myself. It sure would be great to have a little place of my own since my hubby is a HUGE bathroom hog.

Congrats on your 100th! I love the idea of having a vanity table. My grandmother had a long table in her bathroom with a dainty little chair so that she could put on her makeup and such. I used to love to play in that and pretend I was getting dressed up to go somewhere. Anyhow, I don't know where I would put it, but I would take the 36x20 and I really liked the bubbled material thing, but I don't know what color I would go with. I guess it depends on were it would be!!

Oh. . .how this would give me a slice of luxury. I'm the only woman in my home (a son and a husband) and would love to take a moment and enjoy my femininity at this table!

I would chose 36x20 and I would find the perfect vintage fabric: maybe an old table cloth, curtain or even bed sheet that I would sew to fit. I'd keep all my makeup and hair necessities in mason jars, small tins and baskets. I would prop up a large barn board mirror that I'd make myself. It would go beside the window in my bedroom. To the left of the mirror I'd frame several vintage fashion and/or beauty ads in a single verticle line. On the right of the mirror I'd have all my chunky/beady necklaces hanging on pins in the wall

Please pick me me me!!!

btw. . .I found your blog via a comment you left on Meredith's Merchant Ships. I'm enjoying it!

Ohh that would be so fun to design! I would choose the 38 x 22 size and I would use vintage floral fabric and lace for the skirt maybe accented with some rhinstones and some other things. I would purchase the glass and put black an white photos of my fmily underneath and I would have to find a cute chair to match and paint in coordinating colors and with a tussie mussie on the back of it. Too many ideas for it, the wheels are a turning!! Thanks for a chance to enter!!
